Interiors Committee: West Hollywood Library Tour

Tuesday, February 7, from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
625 N. San Vicente Boulevard West Hollywood, CA 90069

Johnson Favaro was retained by the City of West Hollywood in early 2002 and over a one year process facilitated the development of a comprehensive master plan for West Hollywood Park, one of the few open spaces within this intensely urban community at the heart of metropolitan Los Angeles. Designed by Johnson Favaro, the West Hollywood Library, as the first phase of the park master plan, makes significant steps toward achieving the plan's highest priority, the expansion of open space within the park.

The building is neither 'modern' nor 'traditional', it neither waxes nostalgic about yesterday nor pretends to determine a future over which we have no control. As a building that belongs to the community, its architecture has been crafted to project civility, hospitality and durability in a way that nevertheless reflects the way that we aspire to live now - relaxed not formal, tempered not hysterical, dignified not pompous. We oblige ourselves and the community we serve to create an architecture that is of its time and that will stand the test of time.

This tour is open to AIA members and Non members.

Registration: No charge to attend this event, but advance RSVP is required at HERE.

New Narratives for "Living in a Modern Way": California Design at Mid-Century

February 24 - 25, all day
Los Angeles County Museum of Art
Bing Theater
5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036

Chaired by Wendy Kaplan and Bobbye Tigerman, co-curators of the current LACMA exhibition California Design 1930-1965: "Living in a Modern Way," this two-day symposium features internationally renowned scholars who will examine the exhibition's themes by presenting detailed case studies and new narratives. The event also includes a session co-sponsored by the College Art Association that explores the interconnected networks of architecture and design in mid-century Los Angeles, with designers Gere Kavanaugh and Lou Danziger (whose work is included in the exhibition) and architect Ray Kappe. An evening keynote panel with artists Jim Isermann, Jorge Pardo, and Pae White considers the impact and legacy of modern California design on contemporary practice.

Incredible Modern Design Exhibition at LACMA!

5905 Wilshire Blvd.
Los Angeles CA 90036
tel 323 857-6000

October 1, 2011-June 3, 2012

This exhibition is the first major study of California midcentury modern design. With more than 300 objects-furniture, ceramics, metalwork, fashion and textiles, and industrial and graphic design-the exhibition examines the state's role in shaping the material culture of the entire country. Organized into four thematic areas, the exhibition aims to elucidate the 1951 quote from émigré Greta Magnusson Grossman that is incorporated into the exhibition's title: California design "is not a superimposed style, but an answer to present conditions...It has developed out of our own preferences for living in a modern way."

Pacific Standard Time is an unprecedented collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together to tell the story of the birth of the LA art scene. Initiated through grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time will take place for six months beginning October 2011.
