2010 LG Surfaces Student Design Challenge for ALOFT Hotels

For the 2010 Student Design Challenge, LG Surfaces has partnered with Starwood Hotels’ Aloft hotels brand www.alofthotels.com as a platform for the competition. The Aloft Hotels design team and LG Surfaces are challenging students to design innovative solid surface applications suitable for the hospitality industry capturing the theme “Where Life Happens,” making the traveler’s hotel experience easy, fun and social with an emphasis on technology, comfort and style.  Each design concept must exemplify the unique performance of solid surface and be style-conscious to the Aloft Hotels image, presented in a one-of-a-kind approach on a new, fashion forward design.

5 Finalists will be invited to Aloft Boston for the 2010 Student Design Challenge Press Conference in April 2010 where the top 3 winners will be selected among hospitality media, designers, and the Aloft design team. The top 3 designs will then be fabricated in time to debut at the 2010 International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, and then displayed in an Aloft Hotel location.

F3 Awards_Student Furniture Design Competition

F3 stands for Form, Function and Furniture.  F3 Awards is thrilled to be partnered with Airstream and dTank.  F3 Awards is a launching pad for college or university undergraduate students to explore furniture design as an integral part of design practice. The winning designers will receive cash scholarships of $3,500 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place.  The first place winner will work with engineers and designers from dTank to create a prototype of their winning furniture design.

What’s makes this competition different is that the five finalists will give a live presentation in front of an audience and an all-star jury – music entertainment executive, branding/marketing guru, industrial/furniture designer, interior designer, architect and the F3 Awards founder.  The critique is unedited, unfiltered and uncensored.

The design brief is to design a Music Utility Vehicle [MUV] - a pop-up mobile music store to be utilized for as an in-store or an on-site promotion that’s instantly reconfigurable to promote a recording artist to fans on the go. The footprint for the MUV is the iconic and much-loved Airstream Travel Trailer.  Conceptualize the exterior and interior of the MUV incorporating the programming based on the Airstream – PLAY, DISPLAY, DJ and PAY.  The major part of the competition is to design and call out one custom furniture design that expresses the overall concept for the MUV.
