DOWNTOWN WOMEN'S CENTER

Nest Feathers, a non-profit organization, is overseeing efforts to space plan, design, and furnish the seven-story facility which serves the homeless women of downtown LA’s Skid Row.  As part of its community outreach efforts, ASID LA is a significant contributor to the renovation of the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC).

For the past 2 years, the ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter has played an active role in contributing student efforts to assist in the DWC renovation. The 2009-2010 board established a committee, lead by Laura Bolton, past ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter Treasurer and Tricia Clarke, past ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter Graphics Chair to design and furnish the center’s Garden Room.  The Garden Room is a multi-purpose room used for various activities including group meetings; it opens up onto the roof-top Patio Garden area. We will be sharing more about this project in the near future. The 2010-2011 board, along with several student volunteers, proudly brought their design to fruition.

On December 10, 2010, the newly renovated DWC welcomed its new residents with a community celebration attended by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.  It was heartwarming to see the elated expressions of the women as they entered their new home.  It was an honor for our chapter to be a part of this project.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

On Saturday, November 7, 2009, the ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter participated in a LEED Habitat for Humanity building project.  Student member, Ariyan Parvaresh and past ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter President, Michel Dory spent the day helping to provide sustainable, affordable housing for LA area families. The student chapter also made a financial donation to the effort because the chapter believes sustainable, affordable housing should be available to more people. We were listed as one of the sponsors on the jobsite sign. Past chapter president Sean Kim and UCLA Extension alumni Mika Yagi also participated.
